Frederic Thesiger, 1st Baron Chelmsford, P.C., Q.C., F.R.S. [1794-1878]  fine carte de visite by Maull & Polyblank of Piccadilly, early  1860s. Identified in contemporary pencil on the verso and from a contemporary collection of this company’s cartes de visite of important figures in the 1860s. Thesiger as a Conservative politician and twice Lord Chancellor. His son, the 2nd Baron [1827-1905] was the Commander of the British Army during the Zulu War and his grandson, the 1st Viscount Chelmsford [1868-1933] was Viceroy of India 1916-1921.     nov15/1

The London photographer Maull & Polyblank had studios on Gracechurch Street and on Piccadilly. The firm began trading in around 1856 and continued under this name until 1865 after which it became known as Maull & Co.
