xlviii, 271pp [Bengal including 4pp casualty list], 180pp [Madras including 5pp casualty list], 153pp [Bombay including 3pp casualty list].

Later 20th century red buckram cloth gilt, faded, especially to spine, but a very sturdy binding and a sound usable book with clean text block.

This edition, produced when the Sir Henry Hardinge, G.C.B. was Governor General shows the Company and its servants and military officers just after the First Afghan War and Scinde campaign. Unlike so many books of the period these Directories have a comprehensive indexing system which makes them an invaluable reference work for the military, general or family historian.                        jan10/2

The Bengal casualty list shows amongst the 5 major generals who died Sir William Nott, G.C.B., who died at Carmarthen on the 1st January. The Bombay list shows the explorer and writer Richard F Burton as an ensign in the 18th Native Infantry. The Bombay list also includes a list of officers of the Indian Navy and a list of ships, also names of holders of East India Stock.
