60th (Royal American) Regt. of Foot. Officer’s 16mm flat silver button

POA

A rare example of an officer’s 16mm flat button in silver for the 60th (Royal American) Regiment of Foot, 3rd Battalion. The face of the button is in good condition and shows the regimental number in Roman numerals as LX with the battalion number  beneath it, within a garter bearing the motto intersected at the top by the royal crown. The reverse lacks its shank and the backmark, possibly NUTTING, is indistinct. Parkyn: Shoulder-belt Plates and Buttons 1956 pp259-262  notes that the 2nd & 4th battalions had a design like this around 1800, although he illustrates only examples with the Arabic 60 design and he is unsure about the others. We have seen very examples of this battalions button in collections. The regiment was originally raised for service in North America in the 1750s. The American title was dropped in 1824 and the regiment later became The King’s Royal Rifle Corps.   apr15/1  SOLD 18th April 2024
