Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 12 other plates,xii.308pp. Original blue cloth gilt with thick bevelled boards and Northbrook’s arms in gilt to front board, some wear to spine at head and tail, small stain and marks to front board, internally clean, old ownership inscription The Earl of Belmore, Dec14th /31 to top of ffep but with a line scored through it and a later owner’s signature beneath. Northbrook’s period as Viceroy saw considerable activity in Central Asia – Forsyth and Gordon’s Mission to Yarkand, strained relations with Afghanistan. An attractive book, not so often found in the first edition. oct15/6
